Blog #1 Aspects of Communications

What aspect or aspects of Communication interest you most (intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, public, or mass communication) and why?

To first answer this question, we must understand the different aspects of communication. I am going to talk about all five briefly.

  • “Intrapersonal communication is communication with oneself and occurs only inside our heads.” Intrapersonal communication is not verbal but between yourself. This is more on a psychological level in the communication profession.
  • “Interpersonal communication is communication between people whose lives mutually influence one another and typically occurs in dyads, which means in pairs.” Interpersonal communication Is between two people in any form of a relationship. From a stranger you talk to on the streets, to your partner of 10 years.
  • “Group communication occurs when three or more people communicate to achieve a shared goal.” Group communication is what we see when we work on group projects. This can also be a committee or coworkers.
  • “Public communication is sender-focused and typically occurs when one person conveys information to an audience.” This is what most people think about when they hear communication is public speaking. This can take place in many spaces, but there is always a speaker and listeners.
  • “Mass communication occurs when messages are sent to large audiences using print or electronic media.” This went on for many decades before, like in the print era when books were available to a much larger audience. When we think about today and social media, messages can be shared with a large audience within seconds.

When I think about these different aspects that interest me, it would be a mixture of public and mass communication. I enjoy public speaking when I believe there is a point behind the speech. I currently work for Teens Grow Greens, a nonprofit in Milwaukee. We do a lot of different things, but all centered around building a resume, connections, and jobs for Milwaukee's youth. I often do community outreach and represent Teens Grow Greens at events. I have no problem when I believe there is something to be said. I work in marketing, and this is where mass communications are involved. I want all of Milwaukee to know about Teens Grow Greens, and to either join, donate, or follow. I film and edit a lot of videos for our social media platforms. It has doubled since the marketing team truly took over. This has helped us expand and grow. This will be something I could see myself working on even after my time at Teens Grow Greens.

When I think about my area of interest, I can think of the betterment of my community. I don’t believe I'm going to change the world or even the systems put in place for us. However, my goal and interests are to create resources that help. My community is a broad statement and always changing. This could mean minorities, women, low-income families, and even homeless families. I could see myself working in different nonprofits for marketing, media, or outreach. My major is Communications with a minor in Politics and Community Engagement and Activism. My degree is as broad as my goals if I'm being honest. I'm not sure where I want to go anymore, just more of the path I want to take.
