The Meaning of Technology To Me

 In The Meaning of Technology, Pacey claims, “Thus my argument is that, if we wish to understand what technology means to those who invent, tinker with, build, or just use its products, we must investigate how the aesthetic is intertwined with the practical; how the giving meaning is related to building and making; and how to work with tools or with hands may have some correspondence with musical experience” (p. 18). Identify a technology that you use daily. Name it. Then, describe your personal relationship to it. How use using it make you feel? What meaning does it bring to your life? 

Something I cannot live without is the internet, everything I use I need access to the internet to use any of them. From school, work, social, and online gaming without a high-speed Internet connection, it would not be possible. along with how much the internet serves me and my family it has become a social normal to have a fast connection. As Pacey mentioned, none of these technologies would matter without the meaning behind the tools we use.

    Although I use my phone a lot, I have always had a problem with keeping service on my phone. This is not common in our society and has been a hassle for me and the people around me for a while. As a society, it is just normal to have a phone bill on top of a wifi bill. Not having service on your phone can be seen as low-class, especially if it's not an iPhone. This is something I think we struggle with as a community classism and normalizing extremely expensive accessories. This is the new norm, and technology is never changing and people adapting to that. Communicating with coworkers threw emails, finding jobs threw online hiring agencies, booking flights, hotels, and even a house tour most everyday things can now be done online. 

As someone who does not have data, I need the internet. This class is fully online and wifi access is essential. not only in this class but in every class I need access to online resources, and even threw scholarship communication is through email and messages. As a marketing associate, I have a professional email, and Instagram I use to communicate. Emails and messages are the tools I use however, I convey the message and have to opportunity to set the tone, the technology just allows me to do this from my bed. 

Outside of work, and school I watch a lot of TV, and scroll Tik Tok for hours. Youtube is also a time for my family to bond. It is common to watch food review videos streamed from YouTube to our Google Chromecast daily, when the TV isn't on sometimes the energy feels different. The TV on and my family having a conversation over it just feels like home. After a long day of whatever I had that day, watching whatever comes on our feed with my family just feels right and truly means a lot to me.
