What current debates about technology interest me? #3

Image
What current debates about technology interest me?  I'm interested in the discussions around digital trust being key to embracing new technology. I recently learned about the Luddite movement, which refers to individuals who oppose and refuse to use technology. However, the original intent of this term was not focused on opposition to technology itself. This movement was named after Ned Ludd a Weaver, pictured above. Luddites were against the lack of choice, as they believed that leaders of emerging technologies were taking away jobs and opportunities from the people. Unfortunately, we still face similar issues of broken trust today.  When individuals are introduced to new technologies and the benefits they can provide, they may feel as though there is a lack of transparency or information being withheld from them. This feeling of unease can often be attributed to past negative experiences, such as corporations using and selling personal data for their own gain. To comb...

The Meaning of Technology To Me

In The Meaning of Technology, Pacey claims, “Thus my argument is that, if we wish to understand what technology means to those who invent, tinker with, build, or just use its products, we must investigate how the aesthetic is intertwined with the practical; how the giving meaning is related to building and making; and how to work with tools or with hands may have some correspondence with musical experience” (p. 18). Identify a technology that you use daily. Name it. Then, describe your personal relationship to it. How use using it make you feel? What meaning does it bring to your life?   Something I cannot live without is the internet, everything I use I need access to the internet to use any of them. From school, work, social, and online gaming without a high-speed Internet connection, it would not be possible. along with how much the internet serves me and my family it has become a social normal to have a fast connection. As Pacey mentioned, none of these technologies woul...

Technology I use Daily

Prompt:  Identify a technology that you use daily. Name it. Then, describe your personal relationship to it. How use using it make you feel? What meaning does it bring to your life?  I use my phone daily; it is the most useful technology in my life. Phones are the most diverse and complex technology we have access to daily. Now having an understanding of the outcomes of this course I feel I will learn a lot. I care about people and interactions, and use technology to do so but do not think deeply about emerging technologies and how beneficial it is to me.  I work in marketing so I am surrounded by technology and could benefit from learning how new technology could be of use in marketing. I use Zoom, shared calendars, and emails to communicate with my coworkers. My main job is working with cameras and posting to social media and these are all different forms of technology always changing.      On a personal level, I am always on TikTok or streaming vide...

Blog #3 Group Communications

Group projects or working with a group can be scary. I do not mind them and believe they can be genuinely beneficial. When working with coworkers, an evioment is created; often, Executive isolation happens between a manager or a boss. The rest of the employees could sometimes pull away from conflict and being around their boss. Creating a lousy environment, people only see for a short time.  My current job is a nonprofit, and I enjoy working in jobs that use communication skills. This, along with always being willing to develop and change for the majority. No matter what conflict or uncomfortable situations arise when working in groups, especially in your career. That still being said, when you share a mission statement and goal, you can stay on track. In my job at Teens Grow Greens, development and listening to everyone is crucial. I am a Marketing Apprentice and work with a team with a diverse background. However, we appreciate each opinion and outlook and have good listening ski...

Blog #2 Interactional View

Image
Relationships are not a simple addition problem but a complex algebra equation. The way one member of a family acts affects the whole system. This is the interactional view that started from Paul Watzlawick along with his colleagues. Watzlawick was a senior fellow at the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, California. Watzlawick also was a clinical professor of psychiatry at Stanford University. This idea that you cannot isolate what one family member does as they affect each other is interactional.  To understand this theory, I will explain a family and their current situation and how the interaction View could be applied.   When one person is severely suffering from mental illness in a family, the whole family is. This could be genes, but the Interactional view theory could apply. For example, we have a single mother suffering from depression after losing her two parents, who she, along with her two childre...

Blog #1 Aspects of Communications

What aspect or aspects of Communication interest you most (intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, public, or mass communication) and why?   To first answer this question, we must understand the different aspects of communication. I am going to talk about all five briefly.   “Intrapersonal communication is communication with oneself and occurs only inside our heads.” Intrapersonal communication is not verbal but between yourself. This is more on a psychological level in the communication profession.  “Interpersonal communication is communication between people whose lives mutually influence one another and typically occurs in dyads, which means in pairs.” Interpersonal communication Is between two people in any form of a relationship. From a stranger you talk to on the streets, to your partner of 10 years.   “Group communication occurs when three or more people communicate to achieve a shared goal.” Group communication is what we see when we work on group pr...
